Bulldog Adopts a Family

The Sanchez Family consists of a single Mother ( Martha) who works 7 days a week to help support her four children. Her oldest son Leonardo (18yo) was not able to attend college because he saw his family’s economic need and decided that working and helping to support his family was more important.  Leonardo works a part time job at a currency exchange to make ends meet.

Gio & the Sanchez FamilyUp to recently the whole family was living with the maternal aunt’s family  in a 2 bedroom apartment- where two single mothers and 8 children all habituated under one roof.

Gumaro Sanchez is the 10yo and the heart of the family. He attends a tutoring program in the evenings for help with his homework. On a cold winter day, he wears but a light sweatshirt. When this boy was asked what he wanted for Christmas- he answered: “ For my Mom to work less and for her to be able to spend more time with us.” Gumaro has asthma and his asthma has caused him to miss many school days and cold air is one of his triggers.

The girls are Esmeralda (11 yo) and Samantha (7 yo). They are happy go lucky girls who love to play with dolls and make believe castles- often just dreaming of the toys that they would like to have.

The Mora girls: Rosie, Lupe, & JuanitaIn the true holiday spirit, Juanita, Lupe, and Rosie Mora asked the Bulldog community to come together to help a family in need and that they did bringing in money, gift cards and clothing.  Last night the Sanchez family visited the Dog Pound and were presented with the donations that had been collected.

The Gilbert's Grunge

Can you say M-U-D???? Well, there was mud, mud and more mud to say the least. The weather for the Gilbert’s Cross Country Challenge cooperated with us this year with the temps being well above 4 degrees (unlike last year), and the snow was minimal to non-existent in most places. If you were in the right place at the right time, you may have witnessed a Bull roaming freely in the pasture (definite incentive to keep looking forward and run a little faster), a beautiful heard of Santa’s reindeer getting in their morning workout, as well as the dead raccoon lying in the middle of our path that was hard to go unnoticed (poor fella)!

However, it was the crisp air, the hills (I don’t remember there being so many last year) AND the MUD holes that made the race far more fun and interesting than I remember! It felt more like the Gilbert’s Cross Country ‘Grunge’ Challenge when we all got done, but overall, the race was the best one to date.

The Bulldog Bootcampers had a great showing from all the locations this year (GP, LP & Hoffman Estates)! Congratulations to everyone, as you waded your way through the mud holes, pushed yourself up the (very) steep hills and challenged yourself to maneuver your way around the course to the finish! Job well done crew……… Already looking forward to next year!

  2. Mimi Hills- 1:15

Sgt Friday gets 'buried' this week

Lincoln Park campers: You all did an amazing job this week with your workouts, weather changes and all!

Sgt Friday was coming off her first (of probably two) head/chest colds she’ll probably get this season, as she attempted to keep up with her campers this week in class. I was less than successful in my efforts, but quickly learned how very much I appreciate all the hard work each of you put in each week for me at camp! The workouts are fast paced, hard, yet very fair (Andy S & Julie, I know you beg to differ) with respect to the level of athletic ability that I’m blessed to work with each day! You guys are such a pleasure to work with and make my job fun as you test my creativity and abilities to find new challenges for you!

I must admit it’s not fun getting “buried” (with a slight ego bruise to match) by my own campers in the workouts, but it does show and prove to me the hard work you have all been putting in. I know that my workouts can be hard and that I expect a lot from you, but the results are very clear to me what this program can do for you if you continue to show up each day and put in the effort that I ask of you.

Trip, Andy H, Brian S, Jared S & Tom T, thanks for making me suck wind (a lot) this week in my attempt to chase you down in the workouts.

Danica T & Julie S, a little less complaining would be such a nice change from you both, but thanks for still getting sore, showing up & doing the work anyway (even at the expence of the rest of the class getting punished for your verbal abrasiveness)!

Mihir K, Andy S & Gunn, thanks for always finding humor in my workouts no matter how challenging they are for you. A good giggle always lessens the pain, even if just for a bit!!!

Colleen S, Rachel H & Jason C, thank you sooo much for your quiet reserve during the workouts and only cursing me under your breath.

Campers, I’m looking forward to the colder weather (and full functioning lungs again) as we tackle the winter months together and continue on our quest for reaching all of our fitness goals!

Lungs of steel and legs of Clydesdales…..here we come!

WINTER WEATHER WATCH

ATTENTION ALL BOOTCAMP LOCATIONS:

Oh how we love the winter months in Chicago!!!! Please keep in mind that as the snow falls and the temperatures begins to drop, we actually do have a breaking point! It may not happen very often, however, if it does, please keep your eyes and ears open to the weather conditions that surround you both in the early mornings as well as the evening!

Bulldog Bootcamp takes their weather reports from WBBM 780 AM radio (only). You can listen to the weather report on the ‘eights’ (every 10minutes) all day long for the exact LAKE FRONT temps. If the temperature drops BELOW 10 degrees(which does not include wind chill) by class time (5a, 6a or 6:30p)WE DO NOT HAVE CLASS!!!!

You may also check the internet at www.wbbm780.com/topic/weather.php for your minute to minute weather information prior to your class time.

Please no emails or phone calls to your DI’s or the head office as to whether or not you have class. Please listen to the radio or check the internet site for your weather information. More often than not you WILL HAVE CLASS!

Layer up properly, get in a great workout with your team and don’t forget to have fun out there!

Sgt. Friday's Christmas Wish List from her Campers

Sgt Friday loves her job, but loves her campers even more. So, as this festive and wonderful holiday season fast approaches, she has decided to share her Christmas wish list with all of her campers. She felt it would be easier for each of them to give her something if they new more about what she wants and likes. This list is especially directed at her Lincoln Park campers, but is happily extended to ALL the campers at each location.

Take a moment, read the list carefully and then dive right in! Feel free to indulge and pick more than just one item on the list………the more the merrier & the happier Sgt Friday will be!

Good luck to all of you during your December workouts and happy ‘shopping’ Bulldogs!

  1. Commitment
  2. Dedication
  3. Desire
  4. Drive
  5. Energy
  6. Enthusiasm
  7. Guts & Grit

Cold-Colder-Coldest......

This is the 2009 Lincoln Park 6:30p winter class

That Time of Year

Attention outdoor Bulldogs……..”That” time of year is right around the corner! What time of year you ask? Yes, that time of year, when you have to button up, throw on an extra layer and pull out the winter gear!

Every winter is slightly different from year to year here in Chicago, as we never know what kind of weather Mother Nature is going to throw at us from day to day or week to week. Therefore, it’s always good to know just what to wear on the “warmer” days vs cold, colder and coldest days of the winter months while you’re outside training.

Fleet Feet Sports is hosting a Cold, Colder and Coldest seminar to help answer your questions and/or concerns on proper outdoor training gear for the ever changing elements outside this winter. They will be able to give you some insight on proper layering techniques to the best and worst materials to wear in the cold, rain, sleet, snow and ice.

There is no registration fee and is free to the community for anyone to attend! We would love to see you there!

Place: Fleet Feet Sports (Pipers Alley)

What do you do when it snows?

What do you do when it snows?

We get asked that a lot.  I let the picture do the talking

The Secret to Success

We’re constantly working on being successful -at work, at home, at the gym- and I believe I have found the secret to success.  The funny thing is, it’s nothing new.  It’s not a system, although systems can help immensely, it’s not in a book, although reading will give you much needed knowledge to make informed decisions.  It’s not on a video, CD, DVD, cassette, or eight track (you’re old if you remember those).  I’m going to tell you the secret and where to find it….Tomorrow.
